Wojciech Szczesny slams 'idiotic' dad on eve of FA Cup final

Wojciech Szczesny has interrupted his FA Cup final preparations to distance himself from his father's latest "idiotic comments".
Szczesny's dad Maciej has been a vocal critic of Arsene Wenger in the past and this week renewed his attack on the Arsenal manager.
His son, meanwhile, is waiting to discover if his recent role as the club's FA Cup goalkeeper will extend to this weekend's Wembley showdown with Aston Villa.
Wenger last season stuck with cup 'keeper Lukasz Fabianski at Szczesny's expense, but the Frenchman said on Wednesday he had yet to decide his team for the final.
In a message on his official Facebook page Szczesny said: "Really shouldn't be dealing with this one day before the cup final but my father leaves me no choice.

"I have not spoken to him in more than two years and just like everybody else I have had enough of his idiotic comments about the football club and the manager I owe so much to!
"Therefore please do not consider his comments as my shared view. Thank You for your understanding!"
Szcesny was dropped from Arsenal's Premier League team after a New Year's Day defeat at Southampton, where he was partly responsible for both goals conceded and was reportedly caught smoking in the shower afterwards.
In a written blog this week Maciej Szczesny questioned the truth of the smoking incident and accused Wenger of ignoring his own failings.

The Page That Needs Two Heads Sit down for this one: The 1990s was quite a long time ago. Plus Real Madrid keep on being Real Madrid, and Alex McLeish is ready for more 'glory'...

Blame It On The Good Times The fallout from Liverpool's 6-1 defeat to Stoke (and poor season) continues, with Martin Samuel dusting off an old argument and presenting it as new in the Daily Mail. Oh yes, we're on Liverpool's transfer committee again. 'There are 24 signings credited to Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool and it is hard to get a decent starting XI from the lot of them,' Samuel begins. 'Some, like Daniel Sturridge, have been dogged by bad luck. Others, like Emre Can, may train on. Most, like Mario Balotelli, have been hopeless. Yet how many are actually his? Liverpool's recruitment policy is run by a transfer committee. To what extent is Rodgers taking a very public fall for the mistakes of colleagues?' Haven't we done this a thousand times before? Firstly, Rodgers is a large part of Liverpool's transfer committee. As managing director Ian Ayre explains: "We have a head of analysis, a head of recruitment, a first-team manager, myself. A combination of old-school scouting and watching players - and that's Brendan, his assistants, our scouts - with statistical analysis of players across Europe and the rest of the world." Rodgers himself is clear on the issue: "The principle idea when I first came in was that like any manager you will have the first call on a player and the last call. That's the call on whether he's good enough to continue to look at and try to organise a deal and the last call to say yes or no. We will never bring in a player here who the manager doesn't want in." Secondly, let's not pretend Rodgers didn't know what he was getting himself into. "When I came to Liverpool I knew 100 per cent how the club worked," he said three weeks ago, defending the transfer committee. "But on top of that we have a good team of people here and we all work well together - we understand the model here and how it functions." Next, we would be more inclined to believe that Rodgers wasn't driving the deals if Liverpool hadn't purchased Joe Allen and Fabio Borini (for £27m), both players Rodgers had previously worked with. Most importantly of all, Mediawatch is almost certain that Liverpool's transfer committee isn't responsible for Rodgers' insistence on forcing players (including new signings) out of position. Was Emre Can recruited as a right wing-back? Was Lazar Markovic recruited on the same basis? Was Rickie Lambert scouted as a lone striker? Was Dejan Lovren really picked with a back three in mind?

Rodgers Must Now Plead For Mercy

Typical Brendan Rodgers. On a final day that should have been all about Hull City, Newcastle United, Mike Ashley, Sam Allardyce, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Steven Gerrard, Liverpool's manager still managed to make himself the big story. And how. That paragraph is written slightly in jest, but you won't find many Liverpool supporters laughing. A season which promised so much has delivered nothing better than a kick in the crotch extended across the entire campaign. Rodgers' side dropped 22 points from one season to the next, and their Champions League campaign was the dampest of squibs. To lose at Stoke was predictable, for Liverpool have been limping towards the finishing line. But to lose like this? To concede six goals in a Premier League game for the first time? To suffer their worst league defeat since 1963? Last-day matches are supposed to be dead rubbers, and yet this seemed to be the most symbolic result of Liverpool's season. They weren't just beaten, but pulverised. Memories are long, and patience is short with Rodgers. Last season's capitulation was seismic, but that's far more palatable than miserable acceptance. "The supporters have every right to be angry," Rodgers said after the game. "That first half was awful. I take full responsibility as the manager. We have to go away and fix it." Unfortunately for Rodgers, actions speak louder than words. He's quickly cementing a reputation for the latter without the former. This has been a difficult week for all at Liverpool, the back pages filled with Raheem Sterling's ambitions to leave the club. Rodgers will no doubt consider those developments to have been distracting to his side's preparations for the trip to Stoke. There is nothing to excuse such a pitiful performance. Farewell, captain. Please remember the better times. It was a performance to embody the season in microcosm. Liverpool were at sea defensively, and almost completely lacklustre in attack. There was place too for Rodgers's tactical 'creativity'. Emre Can picked as right-back, Philippe Coutinho on the right wing, Steven Gerrard as the furthest player forward. False nines, false hope. Liverpool's result, combined with Tottenham's victory, also has a lasting negative effect. Should Aston Villa win next weekend's FA Cup final, Liverpool must play a Europa League qualifier on July 30. It's not the perfect pre-season preparation. Ian Ayre and his transfer committee can share plenty of the blame for this season's emphatic regression, but it is not his responsibility to create a team which can defend above an abject level. Liverpool have spent too much money on too many players who have impressed elsewhere for it to be a fault purely in those individuals. The buck stops with the manager. "Defending is not hard to coach," said Rodgers on April 28. "It's very easy to set a team up to defend." That only makes the concession of five goals in 23 first-half minutes all the more unpleasant. The Liverpool manager has a wonderful ability to insert his foot into his mouth whilst continuing to talk. Another Brendanism came in early April on the subject of Sterling's desires for glory. "Raheem's ambition is to win trophies and that's perfectly aligned with what we're trying to do," says the Reds boss. "This is one of the great clubs."

Gutierrez Provides Newcastle's Happy Glow

After a campaign of misery, Newcastle's season ended in the most magical fashion for most supporters' favourite player. Jonas is an adopted Geordie. Gutierrez's story is well-told, but bears repeating. In September 2014, the Argentinean revealed that he had been receiving treatment for testicular cancer. He had noticed a lump after a collision with Bacary Sagna against Arsenal in May 2013. After an operation to remove the tumour, he received further chemotherapy following a swelling of his lymph nodes. It was not until November 3 last year that he was discharged from hospital, and began the long road back to full fitness. The first-team return came in March. Gutierrez says that he will never forgive Newcastle for the way he was treated after returning from his illness, with Alan Pardew informing him he was not wanted by the club. It is reported that they also refused to pay his medical bills. Yet it was Gutierrez who put those differences to one side when it mattered most. If there was one Newcastle player to lift the gloom, it had to be him. Gutierrez's cross assisted Moussa Sissoko for the opening goal, and then a scuffed shot sealed the home side's victory and Premier League survival. He ripped off his shirt and celebrated like he has never celebrated before; a stadium went crazy. Having had his own life saved, Gutierrez became Newcastle's own saviour. It was his first goal since his cancer battle had been won. "I know this could be my last game at St James's Park," he said after the game. "Since I have recovered from my illness, I have always said the same thing. I want to help the team and work hard. I've been improving all the weeks since I arrived. I feel stronger and feel I can play 90 minutes. Two months ago, I didn't know I was going to be able to play. "We have to do it for the fans and the city, because they don't deserve to be in this situation," Gutierrez continued. "We are the players, and we have to take responsibility. It's always our responsibility. We are the players that are on the pitch. We have to do it for the fans and the city." I wrote this when Gutierrez returned to the Newcastle side, but even that happy ending has been surpassed. That is the way to truly beat cancer. Fight back, grow stronger and achieve personal greatness. Jonas Gutierrez was already a cult hero at Newcastle. He has now become one of the city's favourite sons. Mike Ashley With his PR at its lowest ebb, it was an opportune time for Mike Ashley to speak to the Sky cameras for the first time. "[My intention is] To definitely win something and, by the way, I won't be selling the club until I do," was Ashley's defiant message. You can read that as an apology for the club's current predicament or the words of a dictatorial owner, but Newcastle supporters at least have some words with which to hang Ashley should he fail to come through. On Match of the Day, Alan Shearer issued his own pointed response: "Now if they stop selling their best players, bring in a few new faces and play the best team in cup competitions, you never know, we might just have a very good club on our hands." Burn. Shearer is right, too. Until now, Ashley has used Newcastle as an elaborate advert for Sports Direct, making a profit year on year. Now the time has arrived to show that the club does mean something to him. It's all very well declaring your intentions to win something, but Newcastle's recent FA Cup record reads: R3, R3, R3, R4, R3, R4, R3, R4, R3. The first show of intent concerns the club's new manager, with John Carver reiterating his desire to stay on as boss. It will be difficult to take Ashley's promises seriously should he again leave the club short in that most vital area. Actions speak louder than words. John Carver He should never manage another match at St James' Park, but it is impossible not to feel happy for Carver. His own obvious inadequacies helped force Newcastle into this sorry mess, but he remains a supporter of the club. Taking the Toon down would have broken his heart.

Zlatan’s Ibrahimovic’s name might not be unfamiliar, especially for those who love playing football or only watching them. Somehow, the football player is not only famous for his performance when he played in Swedish national team or even his club in which it is Paris Saint-Germain right now, but his WAG is also one of the most popular WAGs.

Not yet being Ibrahimovic wife, Helena Seger who is 11 years older than Zlatan is a multimillionaire businesswoman who has been dating the striker since 2002. They met in coincidence when they bumped into each other in a car park in Malmo, Sweden. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and His Wife “When we met, he had double-parked his Ferrari next to my Merca. I was in a bad mood and hissed him to move the car. I think he was triggered by my attitude,” said Helena to Elle magazine. Even so, many of their close friends found their relationship lovely, like how one of Helena Seger’s close friends, Staffan Erfors, said, “Zlatan is a clever bastard on the pitch but he is also good at choosing women. He cannot find a better woman than Helena. She’s almost as good as Zlatan.” While having a relationship together, the captain of Sweden football national team and the clever tall blonde model have got two children, Maximilian who was born on 22 September 2006 and Vincent who was born on 6 March 2008. Helena herself is known as the “Victoria Beckham of Paris” and she’s not keen on having a rival for the spotlight. Meanwhile, on his 2011 autobiography entitled “I Am Zlatan”, Ibra called his partner who is a shrewd and powerful woman as an “evil super bitch deluxe”. Also, he added that the elegant and classy Helena Seger who comes from a respectable family is like “Tony Montana in Scarface, only a girl.” Well, will she become Ibrohimovic wife?

English Clubs Sated By The Bread And Butter Ashley Williams' admission of relief at Swansea's failure to reach the Europa League sadly reflects the mood. Embracing bread and butter takes away the potential for tasty joy...

Yes, definitely, to be honest. I really enjoyed playing the games but it is very difficult. I'm glad I've played in it once in my career and it wouldn't have been doom and gloom if we had got in there, but I'd prefer to concentrate on the league." When asked whether he was relieved at Swansea City's failure to qualify for next season's Europa League, the response from Ashley Williams was unusually candid. To hear the club captain admit his happiness at avoiding Europe's secondary competition leaves a bitter taste. We have been brought up to believe that footballers want to play in the biggest matches. It was another punch to the solar plexus of the Europa League. Among Premier League clubs, this is the race that nobody wants to win, the stage on which nobody wants to perform. A fly in the ointment, rather than feather in the cap. Williams' view is not groundbreaking; he is merely expressing the view of the majority. Ronald Koeman and Mauricio Pochettino have both publicly stated that all engines were go in pursuit of the Europa, but the performance of their players has fallen short of maximum. Thursday night football is viewed as a chore, a cause for concern rather than celebration. The accusations are clear. Playing Thursday-Sunday football causes a fatigue that hampers league performance, trips to the edges of Europe impacting on the fitness of the squad. Any benefits are therefore rendered negligible. The English (and Welsh) view is markedly different to that across the rest of Europe. Spanish clubs see the competition as the gateway to the Champions League, with Sevilla the obvious example of how best to use the Europa League to great advantage. Unai Emery's side are looking to retain the trophy in Warsaw next Thursday, combining these two campaigns with consecutive top-five finishes. "I'm really satisfied with our work and happy for our fans," Emery told Mediaset last week. "We love this competition. Now we must enjoy our success and think about the final. We are unbeaten in the knock-out stages playing against great teams such as Borussia Monchengladbach and Zenit St. Petersburg." Monchengladbach themselves could still finish second in the Bundesliga; Zenit won the Russian Premier league last week. Serie A clubs have also used the competition to enhance the prospects of Italian clubs in Europe. The presence of Fiorentina and Napoli in the Europa League semi-finals has helped to close the gap on English teams in terms of UEFA's coefficients. The Premier League was the only one of UEFA's eight highest-ranked leagues without representation in the quarter-finals of either UEFA club competition. Keep that up and we are in danger of losing one of our Champions League places. So what is Williams so scared of? Given the growing gap between the Championship and Premier League and the dirge of quality in the latter's bottom half, Swansea's top-flight status is hardly in doubt. Even the most rigorous demands of the Europa League will not transform a top-half side into relegation fodder. The stress and strain of Thursday night football is not mythical, of course, but its effects have been overstated to fit the preconception. Swansea gained four fewer points last season than in 2012/13, and it would be a leap to suggest that their 12-game Europa League campaign was the deciding factor. Their results after the five away games certainly don't prove a problem - two wins and three draws. In the last month of last season, only three Premier League teams took more points than Swansea. The famed Europa League fatigue was conspicuous by its absence. There are other examples too. Stoke's Europa League campaign in 2011/12 caused them to drop one point and one place in the league, whilst Everton finished fifth in 2007/08 despite making the latter stages of European competition for the first time in 21 years. Tottenham's relationship with the competition is notoriously uneasy, but they finished fourth in 2011/12 despite travelling to PAOK Salonika and Rubin Kazan in the Europa. They beat Liverpool 4-0 and Fulham 3-1 directly after those debilitating trips to Russia and Greece. Dismissing the Europa League also sets a dangerous precedent. It suggests to supporters that clubs would prefer the steady average over the highs and lows, removing a huge part of football's attraction. The journey becomes tedious when limitations are self-imposed. There is something inherently wrong with a reward for achievement being judged as an inconvenience. Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley was chastised for his pre-season public admission that "cups were not a priority". If Charnley is merely reflecting the mood amongst his peers, it's a worrying trend. On September 19, 2013, Swansea City won 3-0 in the Mestalla, inflicting Valencia's worst European home defeat in the last decade. The local newspaper called it 'the most famous win their history'. It ran six hours of live build-up on its website for what was billed as a 'once-in-a-generation' game. 'There have been more important victories in Swansea's 101 years, but there will have been few as eye-catching as this,' WalesOnline beamed. 'It adds another remarkable chapter to their remarkable rise from League Two to the Premier League, Capital One Cup glory and this European campaign.' Still, much more important to make sure you finish ahead of Stoke and Crystal Palace rather than one place behind them. Victories such as those are now in danger of extinction, as the Europa League's risks are turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Clubs are blinded by the notion that their finishing position in the Premier League is the be all and end all. We have become sated by bread and butter when there's tastier food in Europe.

Is There A More Complete CM Than Herrera? Arsenal haven't progressed in the slightest, shout the Mailboxers. United are bloody rubbish too. But is there a more complete midfielder in the PL than Ander Herrera? Last Updated: 18/05/15 at 09:32

Arsenal Conclusions So a decent result but indifferent performance. At least we got the point required to finish 3rd/2nd. Cazorla has been receiving a lot of praise for his performances in central midfield this season, but his reposition was out of necessity rather than design, injuries to other midfielders required him moving deeper. Cazorla has done an admirable job giving discipline and composure to the midfield, not unlike Arteta when he originally started playing there. What we have lost with Cazorla in CM is Ramsey's energy, power and drive. Cazorla was overpowered in CM yesterday as he has been in a fair few matches which have gone unreported because the team was winning and he still brings that composure and class. Ramsey's reshuffle back to the centre has shown us what we've been missing there. It turned the game and bought us right back in it. Ramsey should play in CM, its better for him, and better for the team. Wenger has to make a choice between which on his top-class AMs - Cazorla and Ozil - gets to complete the midfield. Guess that's what happens when you keep overloading your squad with players who want to play centrally! PS. Looks like Giroud is back in form - this is his actual level - that purple patch earlier was the anomaly. Shaz (is progress finishing with less points from the previous season?) N19 I've seen a number of Arsenal fans who are happy with a point following yesterday's game at Old Trafford. This mentality is exactly why Arsenal have not won anything major for 10 years and need some serious investment in the summer if we are to challenge. This United side is not only in need of a huge overhaul in the summer, the starting line-up was also missing its two most influential outfield players - Rooney and Carrick. Man for man, comparing both starting 11s, Arsenal were better in about eight of the 11 positions. So naturally this was a huge opportunity of Arsenal to end their Old Trafford hoodoo over the last 10 years. Right? Well, you would assume that, but you must have thought Arsenal's season was well and truly over during the first period. No effort, no desire and very little tactical nous. United weren't even that good, but they were made to look absolutely brilliant by an abject first-half performance. We had once again dug ourselves into a hole against one of the worst United teams I've seen in my life.

Backing The Chilean Benny Hill To Score... Degsy is tipping Alexis Sanchez to score at Old Trafford on Sunday but the best call is Aston Villa to win at freefalling Southampton at better than 4/1...

Southampton v Aston Villa Southampton's stock is dropping faster that that of Nigel Farage. The Saints have been serving up some absolute dogsh*te in recent weeks so good luck if you intend to pile into the home win here at odds-on. Villa may have one eye on the FA Cup final but that's still a few weeks away and there are places for the Wembley showpiece up for grabs so I reckon they are worth a flutter at better than 4/1 to make it three wins off the belt. Betting: Aston Villa to win at 17/4 (Boylesports) Burnley v Stoke Burnley have enjoyed a decent season and rarely disgraced themselves among the elite. Scoring goals has been their biggest problem but with the pressure now off I fancy this game could be more entertaining than the layers are fancying. Betting: Over 4.5 goals at 9/1 (Coral) QPR v Newcastle United It says everything about Newcastle's current predicament when a 1-1 draw at home to West Brom is greeted like some kind of cup final win. Three points here would surely put the Mags out of harm's way in terms of relegation and they surely must fancy the job against QPR, a team of 'bad eggs' who surrendered their top-flight status rather pathetically last weekend. Can't call the winner here for the life of me, but I do fancy a few goals. Betting: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5 (Bet Victor) Sunderland v Leicester City Dick Advocaat has really worked his magic since his controversial appointment on Wearside. I had to laugh when asked whether he might carry on next season and he dead-panned that there is no chance as his wife would divorce him. Anyone who has spent any time in Sunderland will know exactly what he's talking about. Leicester are in good form themselves but I fancy 'The Little General' to lead The Black Cats to more glory here and think 9/5 is a cracking price. Betting: Sunderland to win at 9/5 (bet365) Tottenham v Hull City It's all gone horribly wrong for Hull in the past few weeks. They are now heavy odds-on to be playing the likes of Rotherham and MK Dons next season and know they can't leave White Hart Lane without at least a point this weekend. The good news is Spurs have been a shambles of late and punting the draw here makes plenty of sense. Betting: Draw at 3/1 (Betfred) West Ham v Everton After the high point of beating Manchester United 3-0, Everton too have imploded in recent weeks and I can't make a case for them at 13/8 here. Word round the campfire is this will probably be Big Sam's last home game in charge of West Ham. There have been highs, there have been lows, all overseen by that big bear of a man aggressively chewing Wrigley's Extra. Expect him to bow out in typically unspectacular fashion. Altogether now:

Wigan Athletic: The Club That Lost Its Way Wigan went from everyone's second favourite team to their least favourite. Racism, sexism, homophobia, two relegations and a club left as a shell. Where did it all go wrong?

It is May 4, 2013, and Wigan have just won 3-2 at eighth-placed West Brom. Second-half goals from James McArthur and Callum McManaman have given Roberto Martinez's side a further boost in their fight for Premier League survival, a week after the home draw with Tottenham. Win their game in hand at home to Swansea in four days' time, and Wigan will leapfrog Newcastle, Norwich and Sunderland, moving up to 15th. That would put them a point behind Southampton. The following weekend, Wigan beat Manchester City at Wembley. Wimbledon's victory over Liverpool in 1988 is credited as the ultimate FA Cup final upset, but Bobby Gould's Crazy Gang were seventh in Division One at the time. Wigan's achievement was just as unexpected, if not more so. Wigan Athletic had peaked. A club that had only once previously reached the quarter-final stage had won the Cup. Eight years after earning promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history, a little club from a rugby town had taken on football's elite, and they had won. It may sound like sugary sentiment in hindsight, but at the time the cliché was apt: David really had beaten Goliath. Against typical protocol, Wigan were led out by their chairman at Wembley. "The FA have given permission for the chairman to lead us out and we are all delighted," Roberto Martinez told journalists two days before the final. The story of Dave Whelan's broken leg has now become a running joke given its constant retelling, but once existed as an intriguing anecdote. This was a 76-year-old man laying ghosts to rest. Two days short of two years after that Hawthorns win, Wigan lost 3-0 at Brentford's Griffin Park to confirm their relegation back to the third tier. They had taken five points from their final nine matches, sleep-walking their way to the drop. The ten-year sojourn was over. There was an implausibility to Wigan's continued Premier League status, unlikely survival following unlikely survival. Their reversion to the mean of the small-town lower league club was not startling in itself, but the manner of their fall has been astonishing. That Wigan have managed to drop back into the third tier without anyone offering them a shred of sympathy is a tribute to their abhorrent decision-making of the last 12 months. The Latics have transformed from everybody's second team to one of the least liked clubs in the country. If the Premier League missed them, the Championship will not. It is worth mentioning that Wigan's first season in the Championship was far from a disaster, despite the club's decision to replace Roberto Martinez with Owen Coyle. It's the equivalent of moving from white wine to Ouzo, a swift punch to the face that's difficult to swallow. Coyle's brand of back-to-basics football lasted 16 league matches. Uwe Rosler then offered genuine hope of almost instant redemption for Wigan. He took 40 points from his first 54 available, leading Wigan into the play-offs. He also managed them to another victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup, eventually losing to Arsenal on penalties in the semi-final. Wigan fell to QPR in the play-offs, Rosler's players shattered after a 62-game season. Captain Emmerson Boyce, aged 34, played 57 matches that campaign. That deserves a bloody medal. Wigan's problems clicked into gear last summer. Having sold James McArthur, Jordi Gomez, Jean Beausejour and loaned out Grant Holt, Ali Al-Habsi and Juan Carlos Garcia, Rosler spent more than £10m on Oriol Riera, Andy Delort, Emr Huws (initially on loan) and Adam Forshaw. The latter of those was sold to Middlesbrough in January, whilst the first three have started 25 league games between them. Delort, top scorer in France's Ligue 2 last season, is still to score in England. He cost £3m.

The Cynical Gossip Danny Ings to join Liverpool, Saido Berahino is a target for Man City and RVP is surplus to United requirements.

NGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER 'Danny Ings WILL join Liverpool at the end of the season after the Reds won the race for his signature,' says the Daily Mirror with confidence. This column is unsure just how much competition Liverpool faced for a player who did not score a single goal between mid-February and mid-May - though his ten PL goals for the season is still more than Daniel Sturridge, Rickie Lambert, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini managed in total. There is fanciful talk of both Manchester clubs being interested in Ings but that seems unlikely - a 'free' transfer to Liverpool (which will cost between £3m and £5m) is probably the best Ings could have possibly hoped for. We can only assume that he is not the only striker Liverpool will buy this summer. Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror also claims that Liverpool want Inter star Mateo Kovacic to replace the departing Steven Gerrard. The 21-year-old Croat has scored five Serie A goals this season. BERAHINO FOR CITY? We knew before clicking on the link in the Daily Mirror that the journalist linking Saido Berahino - coincidentally dropped by Tony Pulis at the weekend - to Manchester City is John Cross, who told us in December that 'Liverpool could hijack Spurs' Saido Berahino transfer'. Berahino has certainly had a decent season - scoring 12 Premier League goals - but we are struggling to believe that City would see him as a viable replacement for Edin Dzeko or Stevan Jovetic. Cross also links Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere and Tottenham left back Danny Rose with moves to City.

Jose Mourinho: Chelsea manager close to new Blues deal

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is close to agreeing a new contract after securing a third Premier League title.
Mourinho, 52, is halfway through a four-year deal signed on his return to Stamford Bridge in June 2013.
And further talks are expected in the coming weeks with the club and the Portuguese keen on a long-term option.
In his first spell at the club between 2004 and 2007, Mourinho won consecutive Premier League titles and succeeded this season with three games to spare.

The 2005 title was Chelsea's first top-flight success in 50 years and he also delivered two League Cups and an FA Cup.
But he left the club to eventually join Inter Milan after falling out with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.
Since his return after a six-and-a-half-year absence, which included three seasons at Real Madrid, Mourinho has spoken of his desire to stay as long as the Russian billionaire wishes to keep him.
The Blues boss repeated that after Sunday's 1-0 defeat of Crystal Palace, which secured Chelsea's first title since 2010 and the eighth of his prolific career.
"As I was saying since the beginning of the season, I stay here until Mr Abramovich wants me to stay. The day he tells me to go, I go," said Mourinho.
Mourinho is still to win the Champions League with Chelsea, a competition he has won with Porto and Inter Milan.

Ray Wilkins picks his Chelsea team of the last decade

He has obviously stood the test of time. He has been there for the whole period and it is only because they have another outstanding goalkeeper in [Thibaut] Courtois that Petr does not play. But there will be lots of suitors after him when the season finishes. He came as a centre-half, but he is so strong and he scores goals and is a top-drawer defender. First and foremost you have to be able to defend. Centre-back: Ricardo Carvalho Centre-back Ricardo Carvalho Centre-back Ricardo Carvalho When he turned up alongside John Terry, you had the traditional strong English centre-half with the pace and the football of Carvalho at centre-half, having just come off winning the Champions League with Porto. He was a swift, sweeper type of player, who could come out with the ball quite comfortably and score goals as well.
